Chapter Eight

Outside, the wind and rain lashed at the building, pounding against the apartment like the rolling waves of the ocean. Lightning forked across the sky, briefly illuminating the dark room, then thunder cracked and rumbled it away.

Nate rolled over and burrowed deeper under the covers. He couldn’t sleep. He was too used to having Devon beside him, and it bothered him to remember the firm, determined look in the other man’s eyes as he had pulled away. The idea of what exactly Devon might be determined to do made him uneasy.

Of course, he couldn’t really blame the man for wanting to put some distance between them. It still hurt like a bitch, but…it was understandable. The lack of trust, the digging, not sharing. Damn! He’d really hurt Devon.

Nate felt like kicking his own ass, but… Well, he couldn’t say he’d do anything differently if he had to do it over. Maybe he would have said something sooner, but protecting the pride was important. It’s what he did. There were men, women and children that relied on him.

What a mess! At least I’m warm and comfortable, if not happy and asleep. And tomorrow is another day. A day not to fuck things up. A chance to try to repair the damage that’s been done.

Hopefully.

Caught up in his own head, it took Nate a second to become aware that he was not alone. He tensed, readying himself for an attack. Then another flash of lightning illuminated the room and Nate clearly saw Devon illuminated in the doorway—eyes wide, hair tousled, smooth bare chest heaving in and out in great gasps for air. With the crack of thunder, Devon ran flat out to the bed and dove under the covers.

Nate fumbled for the bedside light, drawing the quivering bundle huddled against his legs up to lie across his chest.

“Shh,” Nate crooned softly. “It’s just a storm, nothing to worry about, kitten.”

“I hate storms,” Devon sobbed as his teeth chattered.

Nate ran his hand up and down the younger man’s back until he seemed to relax slightly. Unfortunately, the more Devon relaxed the more aware Nate became of the very naked, very alluring man in his arms.

Nate clenched his teeth, desperate to draw his attention away from the temptation.

“Come on, let’s turn on a few lights. I’ll get you a warm drink of milk or something.”

“No!” Devon’s lax hold suddenly tightened painfully around his neck and shoulders.

“Don’t leave me. Please don’t leave me, Mamm—”

Devon’s sob cut off the end of what he had been about to say—but it was pretty obvious he’d been calling out for his mother. Nate’s heart ached for Devon as he gently rocked and crooned to him—simple nonsense words of comfort. He wondered if Devon had even really woken up when he had come desperately seeking comfort from the storm.

Nate knew he had been one of the lucky ones. He’d been quite young when he had been rescued with his parents, and they had been part of a labouring colony.
